Decorating Small Houses
Owning and decorating a home is a dream for many people. They
want to live in a place where they are surrounded by the people
and things they love. Owning a house is the "American Dream"
and many people work long hours to achieve this dream.
Due to over population, a tough economy and a new found environmental
awareness among people, many these days choose to live in small
houses. However, living in tiny homes does not mean that decorating
small houses is impossible.
People can even decorate small houses with a little money or
effort. The decoration will involve proper planning so that you
can give your little piece of heaven a stylish and elegant look.
Let us discuss some of the tips that can facilitate decorating
small houses:
- Make sure that your house is free of any kind of clutter.
It will give your house a simple and comfortable look.
- In case you do not have enough storage space in your house,
then you should consider the idea of purchasing ceiling high
cabinets. These will give you a lot of storage space to store
things in an organized manner. At the same time, it will save
a lot of floor space for other usage.
- It is better to buy multipurpose furniture that saves a lot
of space. For example, the use of a chest or trunk as living
room coffee table. In this way, it will serve as a table when
you want to place a coffee mug on it and will also allow you
to store things in it. Moreover, stacking tables also look good
in the living room. A dining table with leaves is another option
as is a couch with a foldout bed.
- Rooms should be made so as to serve versatility. For example,
the dining room can also be used as family game room, crafts
area and many other things. Moreover, the kid's rooms can also
be used as study rooms.
- Mirrors and lights give impression of larger space. Keeping
the window coverings open during the day and hanging mirrors
on the wall give a spacious look to the home. Another way to
give a spacious look is to make sure that lighting in the room
goes all the way to the walls. Darkness in the house gives it
a smaller look.
- Technological items must be bought keeping in mind the space
available and meeting all the needs of today's world. For example,
flat screen TVs, small CD and DVD players works best when they
help to save space as much as possible. Make sure that you only
buy those tech gadgets that are a must (not just a want, but
a true need).
- It is good to donate unwanted things to charity on regular
basis. By de-cluttering your home, you are recycling what you
don't want, making space and helping others. If we make it a
habit of taking a trip around the house every three months,
then we will find that we gather so many things in a short span
of time that are of no us for use. They can be donated or sold
through eBay or Craigslist. If you haven't worn a particular
item of clothing in a year, then get rid of it.
Remember, minimalism is the mantra you need to adopt when decorating
a small house and maintaining it. Keep it simply and many other
areas of your life will fall into place.
